The Institute of Rural Development and Functional Management is an organizational unit of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Debrecen, with a long-standing history of educational and research activities spanning several decades. Within the Institute, there are the Department of Rural Development and Regional Economics, the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management, and the Department of Logistics Management. This organizational structure traditionally defines the educational and research profile of the Institute as well.
The educational and research activities related to rural development focus on regional or Hungarian issues and the functioning of European Union systems. Through the education of international students, they also consider global trends. The staff of the Institute approach their research with an inter- and multidisciplinary perspective, resulting in extensive domestic and international networks.
They engage in intensive teaching and research work in rural and regional development, with special attention to the utilization and effectiveness of agricultural and rural development support.
The significance of research related to tourism and hospitality is reinforced by the prominent presence of tourism, especially health tourism, in the Northern Great Plain region. The focus of tourism education and research at the Institute is on global tourism trends, strongly emphasizing sustainable tourism issues. Our research also extends to topics related to gastronomy and tourism based on gastronomic experiences.
The Institute's research features value chain management, supply chain and network management, and chain and network-oriented performance measurement. Questions related to material flow in logistics management involve operational knowledge such as corporate logistics, materials management, transportation, warehousing, and value-creating process management.
The Institute actively participates in training the next generation of scientists, with lecturers successfully involved in the Scientific Student Circle movement, the Ihrig Károly Doctoral School of Management and Organizational Sciences, and the Talent Management Program of the University of Debrecen.
