With over 4200 registered students this is the largest Faculty of the University of Debrecen. There are courses offered in 6 higher-level vocational training courses, 9 courses at B.Sc., and 10 courses at M.Sc. levels. In addition to the B.Sc. courses with agribusiness profiles, the educational portfolio of the Faculty comprises B.Sc. level courses in the fields of business, agriculture, and economics as well. We also provide training in sports management.
The mission of the Faculty of Economics and Business is to engage in such educational, research and development activities in the region that satisfy the expectations of the national economy and agriculture. They also comply with the European perspective, and contribute to the advancement of national and international achievements.
Both segments of this Faculty have previous decades-long educational and research work experience. The basis for both nationally and internationally recognized scientific research work is the demonstrated intellectual potential that ensures that the institutions, the national and international scientific workshops, both within and outside the organizational frames of the Faculty, can perform at their best.
As expressed by the titles of organizational units, the organizational structure of the Faculty has been designed in such a way that the actual educational and research work done at the departments and institutes are clearly delineated and well defined.
Research at the Faculty
In compliance with the current national and international trends, the scientific research activities of the Faculty comprise both applied and experimental-development projects. While bearing in mind the main funding principles and practices of the European Union, the scientific, research, and development activities of the Faculty share the overall strategic objectives of the Plan for National Development, and particularly focus on the issues of rural development and agriculture. The research work relies on the funding potentials provided by international programs, and keeps tuned-in with the objectives and possibilities of the national support system.
The principle research fields of the Faculty of Economics and Business are closely related to the overall profile of the Faculty, and also to the individual scientific profiles of the institutes and departments.
Predecessor Faculties
FACULTY OF APPLIED ECONOMICS AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT
In 2000 the Council of the University of Debrecen accepted and approved the foundation of the Institute of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development. Having formulated its organizational structure and having started to formally operate, the Institute and the Ministry initiated the organizational conversion of the Institute into a Faculty. Following a successful accreditation process, on 14th May 2002 governmental authorities approved the establishment of the Faculty of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development and authorised it to legally commence work on 1st September 2002. At the beginning, the new Faculty provided university level degree courses in Agricultural Economics, college level courses in Agricultural Administration, in addition to different types of postgraduate training courses. In terms of science, the Faculty has its historical “roots” back in the field of science during its earlier organizational focus of Enterprise Management. This was the basis from which several new departments and other organizational units developed over the decades.
In 2002 the Ihrig Károly Doctoral School of Management-and Organization Sciences was established. After the introduction of the Bologna educational system, the Faculty launched B.Sc. level courses in Agricultural Economics and Rural Development, Agricultural Informatics and Agricultural Administration, Finance and Marketing, Finance and Accounting, and M.Sc. level courses in Rural Development, Accounting, Enterprise Development and Human Resource Management.
With the introduction of the new academic programs and courses, there emerged the need for the revision of the educational and organizational structure of the Faculty. The structural changes entailed the changing of the title of the Faculty as well: the earlier name “Faculty of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development” was changed to the Faculty of Applied Economics and Rural Development, as of 1st July 2009. The initial number of six Institutes responsible for the academic programs was later extended to eight. Also, the academic portfolio of the Faculty was completed by courses in Sport Management, Tourism, and Catering at the B.Sc. level; and studies in Logistics Management, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Administration and Agro-informatics at the M.Sc. level.
FACULTY OF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
The first degree courses in Economics at Kossuth Lajos University of Debrecen – the central town of the Northern-Plain Region – were launched in 1993. The training was started by the Institute of Social Theory of Kossuth Lajos University, and was later to be continued by the Institute of Economics and Business Administration which was to be established in 1996. Meanwhile, the Institute moved to a renovated, high standard and fully equipped building on another university Campus area along Kassai Street, Debrecen. On 1st January 2000 – when the University of Debrecen, a new legal entity, was established – the title of the Institute was changed to the Faculty of Economics; which was later, in 2009, then changed to the title of Faculty of Economics and Business. Initially, the Faculty was offering degree courses in Economics and Management, and postgraduate courses in Master of Business Administration (MBA). There was also a Ph.D. program launched at the very start of the Faculty in 2000, which later developed into the Doctoral School of Economics of the University of Debrecen. Under the new Bologna educational system, the Faculty was first to provide B.Sc. level courses in Public Service Studies, Business Management, and International Business Studies, alongside M.Sc. level courses> in International Business and Management, Management and Organizational Science, and Master of Business Administration (MBA). Currently, there are degree courses also taught in the English language, both at B.Sc. and M.Sc. levels.
