The Institute of Rural Development, Regional Economics and Tourism Management is a unit of the Faculty of Economics and Business with several decades of history in education and research.
Our Institute consists of the following departments:
- Department of Tourism and Catering Management
- Department of Rural and Regional Development and
- Department of Regional Economics and Sustainable Development
This operational structure is correlated with the educational and research profile of the Institute. The training and research focus in rural development covers not only regional or nationwide issues but also the operation of EU level systems.
In its research activity, the Institute puts emphasis also on sustainability questions, internationally recognized research is carried out in actual issues of global food supply, the feasibility of sustainable development goals (SDGs) and sectoral analyses on product lines.
The colleagues have an inter-and multidisciplinary research approach, therefore they have widespread Hungarian and international social capital.
They carry out intensive educational and research activities on rural and regional development, with a special focus on expenditure, efficiency and effectiveness of agro and rural development subsidies.
As tourism, especially medical (health) tourism has a key role in the North-Great Plain Region, this validates the significance of our research in tourism and catering.
Focus areas of tourism education and research are global tourism trends and relevant questions based on the training sites of the Faculty (especially Debrecen, Szolnok and Kisvárda), where we put an emphasis on analysing balneology, health and rural tourism.
The Institute plays an active role in the education of the next generation of scientists through lecturer involvement in the Scientific Students’ Associations Conference, courses of the Károly Ihrig College for Advanced Studies and the Talent Management Program of the University of Debrecen.
